Hi guys, I came across this mod and it sparked my interest, mainly because I have been wanting a modern combat mod since COH was released. I'm not an expert at mapping, but I like doing it and I find it fun. I have never worked on a mod before or have released any of my maps. I would like to help this mod progress in any way I can. Below is a WIP of my most recent map.

Hey dude.
Thanks for your interest! But without any offence, the work in that picture looks very basic and has some problems in his design. You said its a WIP, so maybe you'l change it to the better wink.gif ...
I need to know your skill and more than that how much effort you are willing to put in it. The thing is: Building maps with little detail and a rough design does not take too long, but to finish a map the time-effort raises exponentially. So while i think you have put like 5 hours of work into this WIP, it would take you about 40-50 hours to increase the details to a acceptable state and maybe much more to make it perfect. So you need to decide wheather you are willing to spend this much time. ...
Another thing is your intention to increase your skills. I'm open for helping you and give hints on how to use certain stuff in worldbuilder, so you are not on your own, but on the other site you still have to make your map yourself.
....
From watching your map, i see that you do not use any splats. Splats are VERY important to put the details to one area. Textures are always only to get a basis, cause they decrease the performance a lot, while splats do not. The same counts for splines. So good knowledge in use of splats and splines is needed! I want you to have a look into the following 2 guides:Starting guide , Rural guide (gives important tips for spline and splat usage to create details), Relic Mod Wiki (the Wikipedia of worldbuilder)
Another thing is the layout and design of a map. CoH maps are very map sensitive, so you as a mapper create the basis for a good or bad gameplay. Things to look at are:
  • Impass map. You should always have enough space on the impass map, so that vehicles can be maneuvered without a problem. a bad thing are many little objects that create impassabilitys spread over an area. Having big height diffrences is bad in this regard as well.
  • Sector layout. You need a good distribution of important points all over the map. This will spread the action over the map and not only in one place, like an important middle or the like.
  • Flankability. Its important to design your map in a way, that allows important points to be flanked, so that they are not too easy to protect.
  • Narrow pathes and bridges. They have to be handled very sensitive. Especially bridges can be a very big problem, cause they may create stalemate situations. The most bad example is Vire River Valley, which i would call the badest map of all times. So you always need many ways to reach important points.
  • Performance. There are some things, that decreaste tha performance of a map in a very bad way, especially on systems with lower specs. On the one hand this can be, that you use to many textures (tiles) within one chunk. The maximum should be 2-3 textures within one chunk. Another thing that effects the performance of your map are objects. You should not use too many buildings or Trees within a small part of your map. There is a tool within worldbuilder that lets you check the performance. Browse the wiki for more information.
  • ....
Your points breaks with some of this important points, so you need to pay special attention to them in your next projects.

So in the end, you need to decide if you are willing to spend the time that is needed to make good maps and to learn how to use the tools properly. If you think "yes i do", then i would like you to read those guides and show me some pieces of work, where you use your (maybe new) knowledge and give me a reference for your skill. I hope you do!! Thanks =)

Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately I don't think I can make the time needed to make the maps needed for this mod. I'll continue to learn how to use the worldbuilder and maybe sometime later down the line I will apply again. Thanks again.
