So I was thinking that it would be a pretty much neseccary abillity for the Americans to have some kind of precision guided off map bombing, I mean if we're aiming for slight realism at least.

It's used excessively because it minimises civillian casualties and maximises damage on the enemy.

I'm thinking along the lines of a Mk84 bomb user posted image
deployed from maybe an F22?

video displaying the awesome power and precision:

Actually most artillery is unguided, and will continue to be so for a while.

Missiles/Rockets are however the most usual weapon to use with guiding, due to their eratic nature. Bombs is also a relatively new concept to use guiding with.

Most artillery is unguided, and will remain so for some time as guiding artillery is expensive, and isnt really cost effective, and although both the US and China have laser guided artillery rounds, they arent used a lot, so probably wont feature in the mod. Bombs on the other hand are guided quite often, as the guidance systems dont have to be as shock resiliant as those fired from artillery tubes, so they are somewhat cheaper to produce, and due to the nature of airial bombing it is in many cases more cost effective, as you know you will get a hit, so you wont have to try again later, and risk losing more planes, where as artillery can sit there and fire thousands of rounds for the cost of one guided round. Yes its vulnerable to counter artillery, but repeatedly firing and moving can allow artillery to keep putting rounds on target for some time if properly supported and protected.

Essentially air power is more precision, while artillery is more of an area weapon on the modern battlefield, and this will be reflected to a degree in the mod, though we are being very careful to keep offmap artillery and air strikes as support rather than as a counter. I feel strongly that Company of Heroes should return to a state where strategy and micromanagement will win you the game, rather than blobs of infantry being destroyed by reams of artillery.
